All £420k of it. An alternator typically lasts around 7 years or between 100k and 150k miles. Without a correctly functioning alternator, your car is unlikely to hold enough charge in the battery to drive for any purposeful length of time.
The alternator belt is fairly new to be honest. About a year or 2 old and haven't done loads of miles since having it done. This is the first time the noise has occurred since having the belt replaced.

The larger alternator on the TDCi makes the problem worse. When you slow the engine speed when driving or when you switch the engine off the clutch pulley works like a ratchet and let's the alternator spin without spinning its pulley, a bit like on a pedal bike when you stop peddling but keep rolling. I'm convinced its why the Mk3 eats tensioners.
So looks like I need a new alternator, but I'm also aware that on this engine (Mk2 1.8 TDCi) the alternator is in a slightly different position, moved about 9" to the right, with a shaft then connecting the alternator to the drive belt. There seems to be a bearing halfway along this shaft.
If you do not have about 13.8 volts, carry out basic charging system checks and suspect the alternator, its not a smart charge fault ! Correct charge voltage from the alternator, then its time to start on the smart charge system, and you will need a scope. First the system. Pin 1 = Alternator Feedback.
