Step 1: Locate the Third Brake Light Bulb. First, you need to locate the third brake light on your vehicle for removal. You can get access to the bulb from the rear package shelf below the rear window. In some cars, you may also find it in the upper rear lining near the top of the rear window.
The most common reason why your tail lights are not working but brake lights are is due to a bad or wrong type of light bulb installed. It can also be caused by a blown fuse, bad wirings, or corroded sockets or plugs. A faulty control light switch could also be to blame. While these are not all of the possible causes, they are the most common ones.
There are many reasons why a driver might need a new tail light assembly, but two of the most common causes are collision damage and dimming from expiring lightbulbs. No matter if only one of the lights in the fixture is not working correctly, the assembly needs to be examined and brought back to optimal condition.

How to fix. The fix is to pull out and clean the brake light switch contacts. Replace the switch and the brake light should be back on the dead side of the tail light. If the light comes on just slightly, add a little bit of dielectric grease and replace it again. The brake lights should now come on that tail light.

If the right rear turn signal works, but, the right brake light
To diagnose the cause, swap the bulbs between left and right. If the problem moves it's the bulb, if it doesn't it's the holder or the wiring to the holder. In my case it turned out to be the bulb. I replaced both, because if one is gone or going, the other won't be far behind. See my profile for details of vehicle and mods.
